BCK78 - A rare kogai made by Goto Mitsusada. Typical deep black shakudo which is always found in Gotowork. The jitta is made up of shakudo nanako showing a presentation branch of mikans decorated with ribbons and the branch wrapped in silver cord. The gold and silver work is in an overlay in the uttori style. Classic Goto. While I have owned hundreds of Goto work this is the only piece I have had by Mitsusada. Goto Shirobei is the mainline group but there are about 15 other groups which are called wakigoto ( sideline) or just Kyo Goto. These sideline groups are made up of smiths from the Shirobei mainline but are brothers and or relatives of those selected to carry on the main school in many cases these wakigoto smiths are just as good or even better than those given the honor of being in the mainline lineage.
Goto Mitsusada is known as Ryujo the 5th master of the Shichirobei line. He died Sept 10 1723. The Shichirobei line was founded by Chojo the second son of Kojo the fourth mainline. Chojos brother was Tokujo and when he was made the 5th mainline master Chojo started his own branch. Ryujo ( different kanji) his first son became the first master, followed by Ekiyo Ryujos first son and became the 2nd master or 3rd if Chojo is considered the first. This Mitsusada is Ryujo the 5th master of the Shichirobei line and you can see he is in great company and even because he is in a branch school he is a great craftsman.
A rare piece of Goto workmanship for one's collection. It has a NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon certificate from this year and I was told it was a wonderful ex example of hardly ever found artist.

BCK75 - Excellent Ko Kinko Goto Kogai. Motif of myoga ( ginger) mons . very small nanako on plate. finely carved myoga are raised. highlights in gold.
